Delhi based Global Indian Music Academy (GIMA) will honour AR Rahman for his contribution to the film industry, while the GIMA Award 2011 will be presented to veteran musician Dr M Balamuralikrishna.
According to the organizers, the GIMA board unanimously chose Balamuralikrishna who strode the Carnatic music world like a colossus and had been representing India abroad as a peerless cultural ambassador.
AR Rahman will be honoured in the film category, as his contribution to the cinema is immense and he had brought many laurels and awards to the country with his music talent, they said.
The GIMA awards were considered to be a coveted honour and they were presented to sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar in classical music and to Lata Mangeshkar in film music category last year.
